Dressing the Body You Have

Most of us have three wardrobes: the “someday-I’ll-fit-into-these” clothes, the “I-hate-these-but-might-need-them-someday” clothes, and then the handful of clothes we actually wear.

It’s no wonder. Life changes - jobs, stress, hormones, babies, breakups, promotions. Our bodies change right along with it all. And sometimes, it feels like our wardrobe can’t keep up.

That’s why it’s important to, every so often, give yourself permission for a wardrobe refresh. Because you deserve a wardrobe that fits your body as it is today and that you feel fantastic wearing.

Whether you’re dressing for a new job, a new phase of life, or just a fresh start, use this guiding rule: “I will dress for the body standing in front of the mirror today.”

Take it from someone who’s been through many body changes - eating disorders, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause - shopping for the person you used to be doesn’t serve you. It just keeps you stuck in comparison and frustration. Instead, let’s make your clothes work for the life and body you have now.

The most important step is to accept, embrace, and respect this version of you. You can’t criticize yourself to better style. Treat yourself the way you’d treat your best friend - with patience and kindness. And remember, bodies are wonderfully diverse. There’s no one standard they need to meet.

A helpful next step is to get to know your body type. Not so you can squeeze into “rules”, but to understand how clothes move with your shape. Take a look at our Body Types Guide, but keep in mind, these aren’t boxes you need to fit perfectly into, just starting points. Use what helps and ignore what doesn’t.

An optional, but sometimes motivating, next step can be to find some visual inspiration. Search online for people who share your body type and whose style you love. Notice what makes their look work - colours, fits, textures, layers - and imagine how those ideas could work for you. If you’re working with an Edith stylist, they’ll provide personalized guidance through this process. Something worth mentioning here: inspiration is empowering, but comparison steals your joy. So use the inspiration to expand your options, not shrink your confidence.

Finally, it’s time to curate your own wardrobe that fits your body. Let go of the items in your closet that pinch, gape, or feel uncomfortable. Then you can fill in the gaps with new purchases that fit well and help you feel ready for whatever is next.

Your shape may have shifted - from kids, from stress, or simply living life. But you’re still you and you deserve clothes that fit, flatter and remind you of the strengths and experience you carry into every room.
